SAN JACINTO, Calif. (AP) - An 8-year-old girl suffered major injuries when she was run over by a school bus she was trying to catch in Riverside County.

The Press-Enterprise reports (https://bit.ly/1v5bGPF ) the girl ran into the street in front of the bus and was struck Tuesday in San Jacinto.

The California Highway Patrol says the girl was thrown under the left front tire and was hospitalized with injuries to her head and right foot.

The CHP says driver was able to stop the bus before the rear tires struck the girl. The vehicle, which was carrying about 15 students from Park Hill Elementary School, was going about 20 mph.

The crash is under investigation by the CHP.
