FARMERVILLE, La. (AP) - A woman married for just a few days has died and her new husband in is custody following an early Wednesday fire at their home in Farmerville.

Brant Thompson, deputy chief for the Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office, said Valene Henderson, 29, was killed in the blaze at 12:47 a.m. Her body was transported to Little Rock, Arkansas, for an autopsy, he said.

Thompson tells The News-Star (https://tnsne.ws/YU1gYK) that a candle was being used to provide light in the home after power was cut off Tuesday. He said the fire is believed to have started in the master bedroom. Henderson’s body was found in a hallway near the rear of the house.

Thompson said Henderson and Macarthur Gray, 30, a recently released inmate on parole, had been married for just a few days.

Gray told investigators he had left the house about 20 minutes before the fire to buy some prescription sleep medication for Henderson, Thompson said. Authorities, however, said Gray was found in possession of crack cocaine and arrested on a count of possession of a controlled, dangerous substance.

It was not known if Gray had an attorney. Bond information was not immediately available.
