CHICAGO (AP) - President Barack Obama stepped off Air Force One at the Gary-Chicago International Airport and headed for Chicago, where he will spend the night at his home in the Kenwood neighborhood.

The president used a Boeing 757 for Wednesday’s trip, instead of the larger Boeing 747 he usually travels in. The president used the Gary airport to avoid snarling air traffic at O’Hare International Airport, which has been adversely affected by sabotage at the air traffic control center in Aurora.

Obama will speak Thursday about the nation’s economy at Northwestern University and to attend a campaign event for Illinois’ Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn.

Quinn is in the middle of a tight re-election bid with Republican candidate and businessman Bruce Rauner.

The president will return to Washington after his appearances.
