SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake City police say they arrested a 30-year-old man accused of dangling a small dog from its leash, although not without a fight.

Authorities say the confrontation happened a little before 6 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 400 South and 400 East.

Detective Veronica Montoya says a witness reported the man was lifting his dog off the ground by a leash. Police who came to investigate say the man resisted them when they tried to take him into custody.

Montoya said officers used pepper spray and a stun gun before they were able to subdue him.

He was booked on suspicion of animal cruelty, resisting arrest and illegal possession of a prescription.

Animal Control officers took the dog, which Montoya said didn’t appear to need medical attention.
