POTOMAC, Md. (AP) - An employee of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation who killed the wife of a foundation executive before killing himself had been accused of stealing from the organization, police said Wednesday.

Andrew Racca, 42, of Chevy Chase, is believed to have killed Carolyn Mattingly on Tuesday at her home in Potomac, a day after his managers informed him that an allegation of workplace theft would be reported to authorities, Montgomery County police said.

Mattingly was the wife of C. Richard Mattingly, the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Bethesda-based foundation, a nonprofit that funds research to treat cystic fibrosis and search for a cure.

Carolyn Mattingly was found dead in the garage of her home on Tuesday afternoon, a few minutes after Racca was found dead in a car that had crashed into a tree nearby, police said. Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman, said a gun was found in Racca’s car, but police did not detail the cause of death for either person.

Less than an hour and a half before she was found dead, Carolyn Mattingly called police to report that the tires had been slashed on one of the family’s vehicles, police said. Police have not confirmed whether Racca was responsible for the vandalism, Starks said.

On Monday, Racca was informed that allegations he had stolen from the foundation would be reported to police, and “issues arose” between Racca and Richard Mattingly, police said in a statement.

Richard Mattingly was at work at the time of the slayings. There was no known relationship between Racca and Carolyn Mattingly, Starks said.

The foundation is cooperating with the investigation, according to a statement.

“Our greatest concern is for the welfare of the Mattingly family, and we share our deepest sympathies with them during this extraordinarily difficult time,” the statement said.
