COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A new poll shows Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik) with a commanding lead over Democratic opponent Ed FitzGerald.

The poll released Wednesday by Quinnipiac (KWIHN’-uh-pee-ak) University in Connecticut shows the Republican Kasich ahead of FitzGerald 57 percent to 35 percent.

The poll finds that about half of the likely voters still don’t know much about FitzGerald with a little over a month until the November election.

The Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County executive’s campaign has been slowed by controversy and a lack of funding. In a statement, FitzGerald says is confident he will close the gap as more people learn about him and focus on the race.

The survey of 999 likely voters in Ohio has a margin-of-error of 3 percentage points.
