CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Aquarium is planning a $5 million expansion to create a larger sea turtle hospital and exhibit to allow visitors to better see how it cares for the turtles.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (https://bit.ly/10lgmI0 ) details of the project will be announced in the coming months. The aquarium on the Charleston waterfront hopes to have the expansion completed in two years.

The expanded hospital will include more tanks, treatment equipment and laboratory space.

The aquarium began offering twice-a-day tours of its smaller, behind-the-scenes hospital last year and generally the tours sell out.

Since the aquarium opened in 2000, more than 140 sea turtles have been treated and released from its hospital.
