MONROE, Mich. (AP) - Monroe County authorities say a migrant farm worker has been shot by a couple during target practice.

The sheriff’s office said Tuesday the 37-year-old man was shot in the stomach area at a Raisinville Township farm Monday. It says more than 40 migrant workers took cover as bullets landed nearby.

Authorities say the man underwent surgery to remove the bullet and is expected to survive.

Deputies say they found a 26-year-old Monroe man and his 23-year-old wife at their house nearby and discovered they had been shooting.

The couple tells authorities they were shooting targets and were unaware they hit anyone. Deputies say a target in their backyard was in line with where the migrant workers had been working, about 250 yards away.

They say charges of discharging a firearm causing injury are expected.
