KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - The Western Michigan University board of trustees has approved a new contract with the school’s faculty union.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1uAlCnM ) the board unanimously voted Tuesday for the contract, which will be effective September 2014 through September 2017. It provides a 2 percent salary increase this year and next, and a 3 percent increase for the 2016-2017 school year.

The contract maintains current levels for health benefits.

The union’s president says the faculty overwhelmingly approved the agreement. She says the salary increases are “a step in the right direction” to bring faculty salaries in line with salaries at peer institutions.

Negotiations began in July and a tentative deal was reached Sept. 5.
