BEULAH, Mich. (AP) - A suburban Chicago woman accused of killing her newborn at a northern Michigan campground has been sentenced to 29 months in prison.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1pFrNPy ) Alyce Morales learned her punishment on Tuesday in Benzie County Circuit Court. She earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter. In exchange, a murder charge against the 19-year-old from Cicero, Illinois, was dropped.

Morales told the court panic gripped her after she gave birth in a campsite tent in July 2013. She says she struck herself before hitting her daughter with a blow that fractured the infant’s skull. She says she was “alone and scared.”

Morales’ attorney Jesse Williams argued she was fearful she would be shunned by her family because of her out-of-wedlock pregnancy.

Prosecutor Sara Swanson said Morales’ actions should have consequences.
