HARVEY, La. (AP) - A 4-year-old boy died and his 2-year-old brother was in critical condition following a house fire in Harvey.

Friday afternoon’s fire was reported around 3:15.

Jefferson Parish officials said a neighbor, 60-year-old Desmond Bryan, told investigators he saw flames coming from the home and a woman running and screaming that her children were inside. Bryan told authorities he kicked open a door and crawled on the floor searching for the children. He was able to get both outside with the help of a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s officer who arrived on the scene.

Two-year-old Johiah (jo-HIGH-ah) Brackens was transferred to Children’s Hospital where he was in critical condition; 4-year-old Jonathan Brackens was pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
