YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say firefighters extinguishing a car fire in Yonkers found the charred remains of a body in the driver’s seat.

Firefighters and police who responded to the area around 11:30 p.m. Thursday found the red Chevrolet engulfed in flames.

Yonkers Assistant Fire Chief David Gower tells the Journal News (https://lohud.us/1yVagxq ) that the car was crashed into a guardrail on Palmer Road.

He says firefighters put out the fire within 5 minutes.

Police say the body was burned beyond recognition. There was no one else in the car.

Authorities say it appears the car was traveling west on Palmer Road before it went off the roadway, struck the guardrail and burst into flames.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
