MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Officials say more than 3,000 pounds of unused drugs were collected in Vermont during last month’s Drug Take Back Day.

The Mount Ascutney Prevention Partnership says the Windsor Police Department alone collected 112 pounds of pills and Springfield Police collected another 100 pounds. Statewide, the total was 3,349 pounds.

Windsor County collected 289 pounds, 30 pounds more than the last Drug Take Back Day.

Vermont Public Radio (https://bit.ly/1slWTlu ) reports that over the past four years, more than 4.1 million pounds of prescription pills have been collected nationwide.

The Sept. 27 event was the ninth semiannual Drug Take Back Day, which is coordinated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.

It’s intended to ensure unwanted drugs stay out of reach of people who might abuse them.
