NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker is blasting his re-election challenger over a statement that single mothers need governments to survive and are wed to the Democratic Party.

Republican Jeff Bell made the statement in an interview with the Asbury Park Press (https://on.app.com/1qvw5JI ) on Thursday.

Bell says he is behind in polls partly because of the benefits, telling the newspaper that Democrats have benefited from a decline in marriage rates.

He has expressed similar views before, including in a book he published two years ago.

In a statement, the Democrat Booker’s campaign called the statement “delusional ranting” and also said they were “misogynistic, despicable comments.”
