REPUBLIC, Wash. (AP) - Officials in Ferry and Okanogan counties are preparing for the closure of the Buckhorn gold mine and the loss of hundreds of jobs from the area’s largest employer.

The Kinross mining company says the mine near Republic will be out of gold by the end of next year.

A legislative committee led by Lt. Gov. Brad Owen held a meeting Thursday in Republic on ways to lessen the economic impact.

KREM reports (https://bit.ly/1oXq1Ky) options include extending unemployment benefits and waving community college tuition.
