SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - The state has employed of a third-party company to put out the fires at the Harrelson Materials Management landfill in Shreveport.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the state fire marshal said Ferrara Fire Apparatus Inc., a fire fighting company out of Holden, is contracted to extinguish the fires.

Residents in the Martin Luther King Jr. neighborhood have complained about the landfill’s presence for years and have even complained of health issues. An explosion during the summer, smoke and noxious odors from the landfill have worsened the already-contentious relationship between the residents and the landfill’s owner, Michael Harrelson.

Harrelson was given a chance to extinguish the fires. But when he failed to do so, the state took over the landfill and revoked Harrelson’s legal authorization to operate the landfill.
