KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) - Fourteen former Kennewick High School students have sued the Kennewick School District, saying it failed to protect them from a teacher and coach who molested them.

The Tri-City Herald reports (https://bit.ly/ZyykWH ) the claims in the lawsuit filed Thursday in Benton County Superior Court total $70 million.

District officials deny any wrongdoing and say the alleged abused happened off-campus and during events not sponsored by the school.

The teacher, William Bart Pickerel, coached wrestling for more than 30 years. He was convicted of molesting five students and served more than five years in prison. Now 78, he was released earlier this year and is living in Seattle.
