LOS ANGELES (AP) - A homeless panhandler who stabbed to death a woman on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame after she refused to give him money was sentenced Friday to 12 years in state prison.

Dustin James Kinnear, 27, was sentenced in Superior Court. He pleaded no contest last week to voluntary manslaughter after a jury deadlocked on a murder charge.

Prosecutors said Christine Calderon, 23, and a friend were walking along the Walk of Fame near the Hollywood & Highland Center on June 18, 2013, when they saw a group of homeless men, one of whom was holding a panhandling sign.

Calderon and her friend took photographs of the sign but refused the men’s demands for money, prosecutors said.

The men got into a fight with Calderon and her friend, during which Jason Wolstone put Calderon in a headlock and Kinnear stabbed her, authorities said.

Calderon ran away but died at a hospital hours later.

“My daughter’s blood was spilled in the streets of Hollywood,” Yolonde Tassin, Calderon’s mother, said at the sentencing hearing.

Calderon worked three jobs and wanted to study civil engineering, her mother said.

“She was so young and talented and had so much to offer,” her mother said. “My heart is damaged. My baby is gone.”

Kinnear had a long arrest history that included more than two dozen arrests for assault, battery and drug-related charges along with four convictions.

After his arrest last year, Kinnear’s mother told the Los Angeles Times that he had spent time in several mental health facilities and had a tendency toward violence.

“I always knew I would get a call about him being dead or doing something awful,” April Pena told the paper.

Wolstone pleaded no contest to assault in April and was sentenced to two years in prison. Brian Widdows pleaded no contest to being an accessory after the fact and also was sentenced to two years in prison.
