CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - State Rep. Joseph McNamara has been elected as the new chairman of the Rhode Island Democratic Party.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1wa4nqy ) the state Democratic committee chose McNamara in a unanimous vote Thursday evening in Cranston.

House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello last month recommended the veteran lawmaker as the successor to David Caprio, who resigned in July.

The ethics commission is investigating whether Caprio violated ethics rules by bidding on a state beach concessions contract.

McNamara was first elected to represent Warwick in 1994 and has served more than a decade as chairman of the House Health, Education and Welfare Committee. He’s a retired Pawtucket school administrator.
