ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say an Asbury Park police officer has been hospitalized after he was cut above the eye by a suspect during a confrontation.

Asbury Park police tell Advance New Jersey Media (https://bit.ly/1ssulGP ) that Lt. David DeSane was walking to meet up with officers he was training when he stopped two people behind an abandoned building.

Police say he determined one of them had a handgun. During a struggle with that man, police say the other person, a teenager, cut the officer with a sharp object that may have been a knife.

DeSane was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

Police say the suspects ran away.
