NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Newport is getting a new garden and walking paths as a gift from a local garden club.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/JV2etp ) the donation comes from the Newport Garden Club, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The City Council accepted the plan Wednesday night.

The professionally designed and landscaped Centennial Reading Garden will be located in Aquidneck Park, adjacent to the Newport Public Library.

Club officials, who have already raised $50,000, say the garden will include white flowering dogwood and white Judas trees as well as Siberian cypress and big blue lilyturf shrubs.

The plan also includes benches, historically appropriate lighting, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
