PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King say the National Oceanic and Atmospheric is providing nearly $500,000 to the Maine Sea Grant Program at the University of Maine.

The money will be used to help coastal communities protect themselves against the challenges caused by climate change.

The senators said in a statement that Maine’s coast is a “fundamental piece of our economic past, present and future.”

This funding is part of a larger $15.9 million announcement that will support over 300 projects nationwide. Designated as a Sea Grant College, the University of Maine is one of 33 NOAA Sea Grant Programs throughout the coastal and Great Lakes states.
