ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say two people were killed when their car collided with a Rail Runner passenger train at a crossing south of Albuquerque.

New Mexico State Police Sgt. Chad Pierce says the driver, 34-year-old Julie Vasquez, was ejected from the car. The passenger, 35-year-old Luciano Cuellar, was found inside the wreckage. Both were from Albuquerque.

Pierce says a car seat and baby items were found inside the car. Investigators learned the two had dropped off children just prior to the accident.

Police say preliminary information indicates that gates at the crossing went down as the southbound train approached. The train was traveling about 79 mph when it hit the car.

Rail Runner spokeswoman Augusta Meyers says an initial review of video indicated the car attempted to get around other vehicles and go across the tracks before the impact.
