RANTOUL, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a 27-year-old Minneapolis woman is in custody after she stole an ambulance from a northwest suburb of Chicago.

A police spokesman says Samantha Sligar stole an Arlington Heights Fire Department ambulance from a local hospital early Friday morning. Police say was arrested two hours later after driving the ambulance about 150 miles south.

Police pursued the stolen ambulance in a high-speed chase but had to call it off due to safety concerns. Authorities later tracked the vehicle using its GPS system and pulled it over in Rantoul.

Rantoul Police Sgt. Sean Arie says the stolen ambulance was reportedly using its siren and running vehicles off the road as it sped south down Interstate 57.

He says Sligar was charged with motor vehicle theft over $25,000. Court records don’t indicate an attorney.
