HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Prosecutors say no charges are planned after a 16-year-old prisoner fatally shot himself following a struggle where a police officer was wounded outside a Bay County juvenile facility.

Bay County Undersheriff Troy Cunningham tells The Bay City Times (https://bit.ly/1thDggq ) that investigators determined that Vincent DeRocco slipped his hands out of handcuffs and grabbed the officer’s gun. The officer was shot in the hand during the struggle before they separated.

The shooting took place Aug. 28 outside the Bay County Juvenile Facility in Hampton Township, about 90 miles northwest of Detroit. DeRocco died at a hospital.

Cunningham says investigators determined the handcuffs were operational and didn’t appear to malfunction. Bay County Prosecutor Kurt C. Asbury says his office reviewed the case and agreed with the outcome of the sheriff’s department investigation.
