DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - A Mississippi River bridge linking Davenport, Iowa, and Rock Island, Illinois, should open soon after repairs that took weeks longer than expected.

John Wegmeyer, an engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation, told the Quad-City Times (https://bit.ly/Zj7Hog ) on Friday the Centennial Bridge should be open within a week.

When the 74-year-old bridge was closed for repairs on Aug. 3, the contractor was given 35 days to reopen the span. As of Friday, the bridge had been closed 67 days.

Wegmeyer says the bridge needed more work than expected and that the estimated $3.35 million cost of repairs will undoubtedly increase.

Workers completed work on an expansion joint on the Iowa side Friday and will do the same on the Illinois side this weekend, then will wait for concrete to cure.
