SANTE FE, N.M. (AP) - Santa Fe police say the gun brought to school by an Ortiz Middle School student was a starter gun.

Police say the school was evacuated Wednesday after a security guard found the gun in a backpack. The revolver-style gun is made to look realistic but shoots blanks.

Police spokeswoman Celina Espinoza said detectives are still trying to determine where the student got the gun and why it was brought to school. She says the student didn’t threaten anyone with the gun and is not facing any charges.

After the gun was found, students were taken to a nearby police facility, where attendance was taken before the students were released to their parents.

School district official Latifah Phillips says the security guard checked the backpack at the suggestion of a student.
