PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Two U.S. senators are touring Rhode Island to learn about the effects of climate change.

Democratic Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Joe Manchin of West Virginia are touring the state Friday.

Whitehouse will visit West Virginia on Oct. 22 to learn about the importance of coal in Manchin’s state. The trips came about after the senators discussed the topics on the senate floor and agreed to visit each other’s states to learn more.

On Friday, they’re visiting several coastal locations, including a summer community that’s been forced to retreat from shore due to beach erosion, and businesses in danger of washing out to sea.

They’ll also go on a boat with scientists and members of the fishing community and hear about how changes in ocean conditions affect fishing.
