WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - Waukegan’s approximately 17,000 students are out of class for a seventh school day as the school district and teachers union remain apart in contract talks.

WBBM-TV reports (https://cbsloc.al/1o3bHoW ) federally mediated negotiations resumed Thursday night. Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 officials said Thursday there wouldn’t be class Friday. Teachers went on strike Oct. 2.

The Board of Education says the district and the union don’t agree on issues including pay, the use of substitute teachers and an extended school day. The board says it hopes the union will “show some flexibility and interest” in its proposals.

Waukegan Teachers Council President Kathy Schwarz says the district made the statement before the union could formulate a counter-offer to its latest proposal.
