BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) - Western Michigan University is asking the state for $19 million to renovate its College of Aviation.

Dean Dave Powell tells the Battle Creek Enquirer (https://bcene.ws/Zy6ERY ) the funding would be used to expand the college’s 20-acre campus at W.K. Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek. He says new infrastructure would allow the college to expand teaching for aviation maintenance technicians.

Powell says he expects to testify before lawmakers soon about the request and he hopes they will act on the funding requests of 11 state universities before the end of the year.

The university says work on the project could start next summer and finish by the summer of 2018. The project would include upgrades to classrooms, student briefing rooms and simulation and research labs at its Aviation Education Center.
