HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gov. Dannel Malloy has ordered all Connecticut and U.S. flags to fly at half-staff to honor firefighters killed in the line of duty.

State flags have been flying at half-staff for the past several days in honor of Hartford firefighter Kevin Bell, who died while battling a fire on Tuesday night. Flags will be raised to full staff at sunset on Monday following his funeral.

Malloy’s order follows a proclamation by President Barack Obama calling on flags nationwide to fly at half-staff Sunday in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.

The annual service is held at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The event marks the final day of national Fire Prevention Week.

Malloy paid tribute to firefighters for their sacrifices and keeping neighborhoods safe.
