SEATTLE (AP) - The King County executive has ordered an inquest into last June’s fatal shooting of a man by Washington State Patrol troopers on the Interstate 5 Ship Canal Bridge.

Authorities say 33-year-old Jonathan Whitehead stopped and set fire to his truck on the Seattle bridge and was spray painting a green circle on the pavement when he was confronted by troopers and charged at them with a hunting knife.

The King County prosecutor’s office recommended the inquest to Executive Dow Constantine after reviewing materials from Seattle police, who investigated the June 16 shooting.

The man’s mother, Donna Buchenau, told KIRO-TV that her son had a drug addiction and was likely going through withdrawal when he behaved erratically.
