SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Savannah police say a young man is dead after diving from a boat into shallow water off a coastal Georgia island.

The Savannah Morning News reports (https://bit.ly/ZUza0I ) the fatal dive happened Friday afternoon as a boat carrying a church group was pulling up to Wassaw Island.

Savannah-Chatham County police spokesman Julian Miller says a man in his early 20s drove off the boat into shallow water and struck the bottom. Capt. Doug Lewis, a law enforcement officer for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, says it’s likely the man broke his neck.

The DNR is investigating because the death occurred in state waters off the island, which is a federally protected as a national wildlife refuge.

The dead man’s name was not immediately released.
