NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A 16-year-old charged with fatally shooting a 10th-grade classmate in March has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/1whdx4s ) Donte Veals entered the plea Friday during a pre-trial hearing. New Orleans police say 16-year-old Deion Robair was fatally shot March 19 at a house in the Desire neighborhood.

Veals initially pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter charge July 7.

He now faces a prison term of up to 40 years when Criminal District Court Judge Karen Herman sentences him on Dec. 12.

Prosecutors say they screened the case carefully but concluded they couldn’t prove Veals intended to kill Robair, the bar required for a murder conviction.
