GENESEO, N.Y. (AP) - A World War II combat veteran will preside at a promotion ceremony being held for 11 Army National Guard soldiers in western New York.

The soldiers being promoted are members of Co. A, 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment.

They’ll be among 80 members of the unit who will make a road mark at noon Saturday from the Geneseo Armory to the nearby National Warplane Museum, where retired Lt. Col. Joseph McManus will preside over the promotion ceremony.

The 93-year Irondequoit (uh-RAHN’-duh-kwoyt) resident enlisted in the New York National Guard in 1938. He was among the thousands of New York Guardsmen called up in October 1940 when the 27th Division was mobilized.

McManus served in the 108th Regiment before being assigned to an infantry division that fought its way across Europe. He retired after 26 years in the military.
