ROTTERDAM, N.Y. (AP) - A black bear has been shot and killed after it wandered into a suburban neighborhood west of Albany.

The Daily Gazette of Schenectady reports (https://bit.ly/1qMZkbb ) that officers fired on the animal Saturday night after it climbed down a tree it had been sitting in for a few days in Rotterdam.

Authorities had hoped to capture and relocate the bear, which weighed an estimated 300 pounds. Tranquilizer darts had no apparent effect, however, and the bear was shot after it began running.

The bear had been perched near the home of Denise and John Tidings, who say they were planning on going camping but changed plans when nature visited them instead.

John Tidings says he believes police exhausted all other options before shooting the animal.
