FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (AP) - The mayor of a Wake County town is defending police use of pepper spray on a black teenager inside the home of his white foster parents.

Police in Fuquay-Varina mistook the youth for an intruder on Oct. 6 and used pepper spray in an incident that has attracted national attention.

In a statement to local media outlets on Friday, Mayor John Byrne said he stands by the town’s police officers. The mayor says officers were dispatched after a side door was found ajar at the home in an area where there had a recent series of crimes.

The mayor says 18-year-old DeShawn Currie was sprayed after an officer attempted to handcuff him and Currie knocked the cuffs away. Currie has not been charged with any crime.
