WATERVLIET TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say the pilot of a sea plane escaped injury when he crashed while trying to land on a lake in southwestern Michigan.

The Berrien County sheriff’s department says the accident happened about 1:15 p.m. Saturday.

The department says that the pilot was the only person aboard when the single-engine privately owned plane crash-landed in Paw Paw Lake. The site is in Watervliet Township, about 15 miles east-northeast of St. Joseph.

The department isn’t releasing the pilot’s name but says he’s a 45-year-old from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It says boaters rescued him after the cash.

The department says there was no significant leak of fluids from the plane and says the Federal aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
