COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Motorists in South Carolina can now get a clearer picture of traffic conditions across the state.
The Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that it is now streaming video from all its 336 traffic cameras along interstates and major highways in the state.
The new system replaces one in which still images from the cameras were updated every few seconds with another still image.
The new streaming video images are available online and through the 511 traveler apps available for smartphones.
The cameras feed into DOT traffic centers where employees can contact emergency vehicles and department trucks that help stranded motorists in some areas. The department does not make recordings of the camera images.
