SOUTH TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities have identified the man who was fatally shot after firing at a South Tucson police officer multiple times with a high-powered rifle.

South Tucson police say the dead man was 40-year-old Frank R. Kerr, who had a general delivery address.

They say the name of the officer involved in the shooting won’t be released until their investigation is completed.

Police investigated a report of shots being fired early Friday and encountered Kerr walking on a sidewalk.

As an officer approached, they say Kerr faced him and fired his rifle several times, hitting the patrol car.

The officer fired back and struck Kerr, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pima County Sheriff’s homicide unit is investigating the shooting, which police say is standard protocol for an officer involved shooting.
