LEAKESVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A correctional officer at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville is in custody for allegedly bringing contraband into the facility.

WDAM-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1DarhlV ) 36-year-old Sherrika Bennet surrendered to U.S. Marshals Tuesday morning. It was not known if she has an attorney.

According to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Bennet has been suspended without pay. She’s worked for the department since Sept. 16, 2013.

The department says the investigation division issued a warrant for Bennet’s arrest following her alleged attempt to bring cellular phones into the facility.

Last year, officials say, the department confiscated 1,746 illegal cell phones in its three prisons. So far this year, more than 500 phones have been seized. MDOC says the phones are distributed to non-profit groups, crime victim advocacy groups and domestic violence shelters.
