PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland Timbers have announced the formation of a USL Pro team that will start play next year.

The team, called Timbers 2 or T2, will play home games at the University of Portland’s Merlo Field.

The USL Pro league, which had 14 teams this year, is a step below Major League Soccer and allows teams to develop young players and provide additional opportunities for MLS players who don’t have prominent roles with their teams.

The Timbers also announced the 1975 Trust program, which will allow supporters to help shape the team’s direction and make decisions about such things as the jerseys the players wear on game day. The program is limited to the first 1,975 season-ticket holders.

The rival Seattle Sounders also announced their own USL Pro team for next year.
