INDIAN SHORES, Fla. (AP) - Wildlife officials say they had to euthanize a pygmy sperm whale that was beached near Tampa Bay.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that the 6½-foot-long marine mammal was found Tuesday morning on Indian Shores beach in Pinellas County. An FWC spokeswoman says female whale was lethargic and thin for its size. She also had several small shark bites.

The Tampa Tribune (https://goo.gl/bi2ywE ) reports that marine experts from FWC and Clearwater Marine Aquarium tended to the animal for about two hours before determining that it couldn’t be saved.

A necropsy was planned.
