JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Comcast will unveil by the end of the year some 200 public WiFi “hotspots” throughout Jackson where its customers can connect with their laptops or other mobile devices.

The Clarion-Ledger reports (https://on.thec-l.com/1xPO5nW) specific locations have yet to be determined. Company spokesman Alex Horwitz says Comcast is targeting “the most heavily trafficked areas - campuses, parks, outdoor shopping centers. We’re looking to make Jackson a truly connected city.”

Comcast is unveiling WiFi access in other cities in its national service network.

Horwitz said Tuesday the Jackson area currently has 15,000 home-based hotspots and several thousand more at businesses. It has introduced a handful of public WiFi locations in metro Jackson previously.

Comcast’s WiFi announcement is part of a larger technological push Comcast is making in Jackson. That also included on Tuesday the unveiling of a “smart home” in which the company’s cable, Internet and home-security features are integrated into what it calls the “home of the future” via cloud-based technology.

Comcast and other tech-oriented companies have invested heavily in home integration, touting one-stop functionality that allows people to control, typically from a single control panel, what’s on TV in which room, lighting, heating and cooling and the locking and unlocking of doors and windows. Those functions also can be monitored remotely, and parents at work can have video images of their kids getting home from school sent to their mobile devices.

As part of its diversification strategy, C Spire also has been rolling out high-speed fiber optic service in Batesville, Clinton, Corinth, Hattiesburg, Horn Lake, Jackson, McComb, Quitman, Ridgeland and Starkville.
