CANTON, N.Y. (AP) - A former jail guard for a northern New York county has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison for running his family off a road during a domestic dispute last fall.

The Watertown Daily Times reports (https://bit.ly/1CkaJpp ) that 33-year-old Douglas A. Matthews Jr. of Canton was sentenced Tuesday to 10½ years in prison as a part of a plea deal in St. Lawrence County Court.

Prosecutors say Douglas rammed a car driven by his 65-year-old mother-in-law last October on Route 310 in the town of Canton. Her vehicle went off the road and overturned in a cornfield. Inside the car was his wife and their two sons, then 5 and 9. His wife was hospitalized for a day.

Douglas was a corrections officer at the county jail.
