SURF CITY, N.C. (AP) - A bomb squad has destroyed an improvised explosive device made up of car flares, a battery pack and wine bottles connected with duct tape that was found in Surf City.

Authorities tell local media outlets that a real estate agent saw the device Tuesday in a home that has been vacant since earlier this month.

The bomb squad from Wilmington responded and a two-block area was evacuated and the device was detonated in a nearby vacant lot.

Authorities say the wine bottles had a liquid in them. It’s not known how long the device may have been at the home.
