INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana coach Kevin Wilson has named freshman Chris Covington his starting quarterback Monday, but that could change.

The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday’s that Covington’s mother said her son would not play against No. 8 Michigan State this weekend. That would give true freshman Zander Diamont, last year’s Los Angeles city player of the year, the starting job. Athletic department officials did not respond to the report, and Wilson didn’t address the potential change during his weekly radio show Wednesday night.

Covington took over for Nate Sudfeld last weekend after the junior sustained a season-ending separated left shoulder.

Two previous starters, Tre Roberson and Cam Coffman, transferred during the offseason. When Sudfeld got hurt, Indiana (3-3, 0-2 Big Ten) was forced to turn to a group of inexperienced backups.
