LEBANON, Ohio (AP) - A southwest Ohio lawmaker is creating controversy with a campaign fundraiser centered on firing guns that he’s calling a “Machine Gun Social.”

The Oct. 25 event at a nature center outside Lebanon allows gun-rights supporters to fire a variety of machine guns with an instructor’s supervision. It’s all to benefit the re-election campaign of Republican state Rep. Ron Maag.

The Cincinnati Enquirer (https://cin.ci/1r8VWaX ) reports the name of the event has led to outcry from some Democrats, including Maag’s opponent in the November election, Charlene Schneider. She says “Machine Gun Social” is an “oxymoron.”

But Maag said he thinks it’s “a catchy little phrase.”

Maag says the event will be safe, with people firing the guns one at a time. He says the weapons will be locked down-range.
