AUBURN, Maine (AP) - A Lewiston man charged with running down and killing his pregnant girlfriend in Maine is pleading not guilty.

Evaristo De Deus (deh-DAY-us) appeared in Androscoggin County Superior Court on Wednesday. He is charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Laudrinha Kubeloso (Koo-buh-leh-so), who was four months pregnant when she was struck and killed by an SUV. De Deus later tried to flee to Haiti.

The Sun Journal (https://bit.ly/1Dcs2e9 ) reports a bail hearing is expected soon. An affidavit says a witness saw a man “run her over and continue driving.” Police later traced the vehicle to De Deus.

De Deus and Kubeloso were recent asylum seekers from Angola. A judge ordered De Deus held without bail during a brief appearance in the same court on Sept. 26.
