LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan’s unemployment rate dropped 0.2 percentage points to 7.2 percent in September, the lowest jobless rate since March 2008.

The state Department of Technology, Management & Budget said Wednesday the seasonally adjusted rate is down 1.6 percentage points from a year ago, when it was 8.8 percent. Last month’s unemployment rate was 1.3 points above the national average, which also declined 0.2 points in September.

The labor force grew by 3,000 and employment was up 9,000. Total employment of roughly 4.4 million had been flat but saw gains in the last two months.

The state says 348,000 residents were unemployed but actively seeking work in September.
